Our pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit offers top-of-the-line patient care as well as the most advanced technology for children experiencing seizures. Through the support of generous donors, we integrated digital wireless monitoring technology, making Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital the first and only mobile pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit in the state of Michigan. This work was funded through generous philanthropic support from the Steve and Amy Van Andel family and other donors.

Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital has the first the first mobile epilepsy monitoring unit in the state of Michigan and one of a few in the country. We’re proud to offer top-of-the-line patient care as well as the most advanced technology for patients experiencing seizures. Wireless monitoring offers children the ability to move freely about their room and floor playroom giving them and caretakers a place to interact and play normally while advanced neurodiagnostic testing is occurring. During the entirety of the stay in the EMU, the patient is being carefully monitored by a dedicated team of pediatric-trained epileptologists, nurses and monitoring technicians.
What Is a Monitoring Study
A monitoring study provides a detailed analysis of brain activity over a longer period of time. It allows the epilepsy experts to see details that can lead to better understanding of your child's condition and the most effective treatment plan.
- The duration of your child's study will vary based on his or her age, but overnight stays may be necessary.
- You’ll have a private room in our dedicated children's epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU).
- Each room has a microphone so we can communicate at any time.
- A parent must be present throughout the study (please know that our child life specialists are happy to give you a break).
- Electrodes will be placed on your child's head, but our wireless monitoring will allow your child to move freely about the room, floor and playroom so you can interact and play while advanced neurodiagnostic testing is occurring. To ensure a good connection of EEG leads, please be sure your child has clean hair with no oil, conditioner, gel or hairspray, and no braids or hairpieces.

What To Bring
- All medications your child receives at home in original containers.
- A list of the medications and dosing to give the doctor. Continue giving your child his/her medications during the EEG, unless otherwise instructed by his/her neurologist.
- Your child's favorite games, toys, books, homework, blankets or stuffed animals.
- Button-front or zip-up clothing for your child and personal items for your child and yourself.
