Clinical teacher program

The Office of Medical Education is proud to announce the launch of the hybrid Clinical Teacher Program. This updated course is a direct result of the Faculty Development Needs Assessment conducted in 2021 with all our residency and fellowship programs.

The Clinical Teacher Program aims to create a culture of academic excellence by cultivating professional and personal development in clinical faculty by: 

• Developing and enhancing clinical teaching, assessment and feedback skills
• Improving the learning environment at Spectrum Health

At the end of this program, participants will: 

• Improve their ability to effectively teach in busy clinical settings 
• Expand their knowledge to assess resident or medical student performance by direct observation
• Improve their ability to give constructive and effective feedback to learners
• Increase their capability to teach clinical procedures
• Practice evaluating residents using competency-based assessments

The Clinical Teacher Program condenses the previous two-day in-person course into a hybrid model consisting of: 

• An engaging, interactive and asynchronous two-hour online module
• A four-hour in-person session, including group discussions and opportunities to practice new skills 

Topics covered in the course: 

• Orienting new learners 
• Precepting in one minute 
• Conducting direct observations 
• Teaching bedside procedures 
• Giving feedback 
• Designing effective competency-based assessment
• Clinical questioning 

The new Clinical Teacher Program is open to Program Directors, Assistant Program Directors, Core and Community Faculty, as well as Fellows and Senior/Chief Residents. Completing both portions of the course will earn six CME credits.
