Employer & Employee FAQs

What is the process for screening and testing employees?

As businesses continue to re-open, Spectrum Health is ready to support you in keeping your employees safe and healthy. Spectrum Health is offering employers three high-quality COVID-19 testing options throughout the Grand Rapids Area: Asymptomatic Testing, Symptomatic Testing and Serology (Antibody) Testing. In addition, we have a new Spectrum Health training video that assists in educating your employees in minimizing their risk of COVID-19.

For Asymptomatic Testing
  • A NARES Swab Collection is the best test for asymptomatic individuals, which can be performed on all employees, randomly, or as needed to keep employees healthy and at work. It is the least invasive approach and is 99.5% accurate. Results will be provided within 24 hours.
  • To schedule, complete the Employer Intake Form. For your convenience, a member of our Spectrum Health Employer Hotline will reach out to you directly to facilitate on-site or near-site testing.
For Symptomatic Testing
  • Nasopharyngeal Collection is the recommended test for symptomatic employees. While it is more invasive it is reimbursable by a majority of health insurances. Results will be provided within 24 hours.
  • Same-day testing may be scheduled through the Employer Hotline at 616.486.1075. Testing will be provided at Spectrum Health, 1300 Michigan Street, Grand Rapids.
For Serology (Antibody) Testing
  • Serology Testing is a blood draw which measures antibody production against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It can indicate previous infection with COVID-19. It is unknown if the presence of antibodies indicates immunity or protection against future infection.
  • To schedule, complete the Employer Intake Form. For your convenience, a member of our Spectrum Health Employer Hotline will reach out to you directly to facilitate on-site or near-site testing.

How can I obtain proof of the quarantine my doctor ordered me?

The best place to receive notes is via your MyHealth account. Sign up for MyHealth online and obtain visit notes following your appointments.

How can I request a "Return to Work" note?

Please contact our Employer Hotline at 616.486.1075. Our clinical team will be more than happy to assist you and your employee(s) with this process.

Should I request an employee who previously tested positive for COVID, proof of a negative test result prior to returning to work?

Positive employees should not return to work until they meet the criteria to discontinue home isolation and have consulted with a healthcare provider and state or local health department. It is not recommended for Employers to require a sick employee to provide a negative COVID-19 test result prior to returning to work.

Where can I get a copy of my doctor’s visit?

The best resource is your MyHealth account.

How do we keep our employees safe?

Spectrum Health recommends following the guidelines set forth by the CDC and WHO to help keep your employees safe. This includes proper cleaning and disinfection, working to reduce transmission among employees, and maintaining a healthy work environment. For detailed guidance specific to businesses, additional information is available from the CDC guidance for businesses.

What products do we use and when is best to sanitize?

Spectrum Health aligns with the CDC’s routine environmental cleaning and disinfection, available at their website. Spectrum Health uses EPA approved cleaners and disinfectants, a full list of which is available at the EPA website.

What is the proper handwashing technique?

Spectrum Health promotes the five steps to proper handwashing (wet, lather, scrub for 20 seconds, rinse, and dry). This information is available in printable format from both Spectrum Health and the CDC.

What are my options if I want to require all employees for testing, even asymptomatic employees?

Please call our Employer Occupational Health Services at 616.486.5075 for available services

How do I determine if I have an outbreak of COVID-19 and how do I handle these?

Please call our employer hotline at 616.486.1075 if you have concerns regarding an outbreak (2 or more team members) or with questions re: contact tracing.

How care I ensure the safety of my occupants and water system after prolonged building shut downs?

The temporary shutdown or reduced operation of a building and reductions in normal water use can create hazards for returning occupants. Two potential microbial hazards that should be considered prior to reopening after a period of building inactivity are mold and Legionella (the cause of Legionnaires’ disease). The CDC offers guidance for mold awareness, monitoring and remediation and reducing risks of Legionella during and after prolonged shutdowns.

How do I support the mental well-being of my employees during this time?

This pandemic has taken everyone out of the “normal” and can leave us all feeling stressed and anxious. Visit the Spectrum Health Emotional Wellness and Support webpage for resources.

Does Spectrum Health offer employer support for the flu in addition to COVID-19?

Yes, Spectrum Health offers on-site flu shot clinic for local businesses and organizations. On-site flu shot clinics are a proactive and effective way to protect your employees and keep them healthy, productive and well, all year round.
