Internal Medicine - Geriatrics
Spectrum Health Medical Group internal medicine geriatric specialists are physicians who specialize in the assessment and management of health care needs for people over the age of 65. Working closely with the patient, family and other health care professionals, our geriatric specialists meet the specific needs of each patient as they age.
Geriatricians are board certified in internal medicine, with several years of special training in the care of the elderly. In addition to preventive health care, they are trained to address specific issues in the aging patient, such as:
- Chronic heart and lung disease
- Impaired ability to function
- Memory loss
- Alzheimer's disease
Our geriatricians treat the "whole" patient by taking every aspect of the patient's life into account, so that treatment is adjusted to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of the patient. We focus on optimizing quality of life and functional ability for patients.
A typical geriatric assessment includes a complete physical, including screening tests and blood work; a comprehensive medical history; a record of all medications and supplements the patient is taking; cognitive tests; osteoporosis screening; vision and hearing tests; dietary consultation; a dental exam; a social worker evaluation and a family conference. After evaluation, the geriatrician uses a team approach to coordinate the patient's care with other providers for specific conditions, medication, hospitalization, therapy and rehabilitation.
